Read on as we explain the origin of this epic brand.

The BMW name stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke (the founder), German automaker noted for quality sports sedans and motorcycles. BMW has its history in producing aircraft engines in 1913. During the First World War, BMW supplied the air force of the German Empire.

After the company got banned from making aircraft engines for the military, they produced its first motorcycle, the R32, in 1923. It was very innovative at that time, automobiles had not yet broken through into the mainstream. If you wanted to travel long distances on land, you went by train. Unfortunately R32 didn’t make much money and company started car manufacturing

The first six-cylinder car from BMW was the 328. It began an immensely successful racing tradition with a never-ending stream of breathtaking, record-setting, and smile-inducing machines that have consistently impressed the world. This includes win by the 328 at the 1940 Mille Miglia

The war

During the war, BMW again began producing military equipment to support Nazi germany.. Forced laborers (prisoners of war or inmates of the nearby concentration camp) built machines that fueled the German war effort. Once the Nazis lost, their factory was destroyed and left at the verge of collapse.

BMW returned to developing their powerful line of motorcycles after the war. Due to high production costs, this was a spectacular commercial flop. Before the entire company went into bankruptcy, they went into car production.
