Every great company has a founding myth or a juicy story it’s based on. Automobili Lamborghini’s origin story centers around a clash of titans, mid century Italian industrial capitalist titans: Ferruccio Lamborghini and Enzo Ferrari.

The history of Lamborghini started with this epic battle between Lamborghini and Enzo Ferrari, but the tale of the incredible Italian sports car company begins way back in history.

Lamborghini was a successful business owner of a tractor-manufacturing company who, legend has it, decided to buy himself a Ferrar sports car. But the clutch of his new Ferrari had some issues, and when Lamborghini had his own company’s engineers fix the problem, he called for a meeting with team Ferrari to offer the technical solution. Ferrari didn’t take him seriously and brushed him off, replying with “You’re just a silly tractor manufacturer, how could you possibly know anything about sports cars?”

The exact wording of the ill-tempered verbal exchange between Enzo Ferrari and Ferruccio Lamborghini that inspired Lamborghini to become an automobile manufacturer —if, indeed, the conversation happened at all—is steeped in myth & history

Lamborghini, feeling insulted & challenged, resolved to build sports cars that would show Ferrari how it should be done. He started with some old- school 1960s-style models, starting with the 350GT in 1964. But Lamborghini became the iconic Lamborghini we know now with the introduction of the Miura, the model that made a memorable debut at the 1966 Geneva International Motor Show. The next released car, Lamborghini Countach did not fail to impress. It got its name because a superior worker in the company saw the concept and yelled out “Countach”.

Today, the Miura lives on as the Aventador, Lamborghini’s flagship mid-engine V-12 sports car. All the models that followed Miura, the Countach, Diablo, Murciélago, and Aventador, were extremely well received by the public.

Still, the company failed to continue its excellence & keep up its brand value in the 1990s. Only a few years after creating the company, Lamborghini decided to retire in the early 1970s. He sold his interest and left to spend his days in his vineyard. Over the years, Lamborghini slowly grew from a small unknown company to one of the world’s most sought after luxury car producers. Eventually, Lamborghini crossed Ferrari in the eyes of the public when it came to luxury & brand value. “You buy a Ferrari when you want to be somebody. You buy a Lamborghini when you are somebody.”, Frank Sinatra
